Saul Bass Outline Revision

Do we dare?

1.     Early life
a.     Schooling
2.     Film title sequences and movie posters
a.     Spartacus
                                               i.     Opening credits showed basic symbols of slavery and Rome
1.     Saul was asked to help design scenes and sets in the film
                                              ii.     Movie poster showed a blocky almost deformed man who seams tortured, in pain, and angry
1.     Saul created an art style that was uniquely his while infusing it with the style of Roman paintings
a.     This can be seen when comparing the movie poster from Spartacus to that of The Man With The Golden Arm, or Anatomy of a Murder
3.     Style for designing
a.     Differs from movies, to movie posters, to logos
                                               i.     Movies
1.     Opening scenes that keep the viewer interested, but don’t take away from the opening credits
                                              ii.     Movie posters
1.     Bold type and easy flowing graphics that balance each other out
                                            iii.     Logos
1.     Logo’s are easily identifiable while still being a little abstract
b.     Projects rely heavily on negative space
c.      Saul uses only two or three to create the design
                                               i.     The minimum necessary to give a design its full meaning
d.     Projects are composed of either strait lines and blocky shapes or simple curving lines
4.     Logos and other designs
a.     Girl Scouts of America
                                               i.     Took traditional aspects of earlier designs and created a more appealing logo that contained meaning
1.     Fellowship
2.     Diversity
3.     Courage
                                              ii.     Saul’s logo has been changed but not very much
b.     United Airways
                                               i.     Got rid of the shield in exchange for a swoosh
1.     The swoosh gives the logo its iconic U shape that has been easily identified
2.     The logo’s colors are red, and blue with a white background enforcing the company as an American travel company
                                              ii.     Changed the text
1.     Not by much but the text has a more blocked and unified design
a.     Incorporates strait lines horizontally and curves vertically
                                            iii.     Logo changes
1.     United Airways commissioned a design firm to redesign their logo
2.     The firm refused to change the logo calling it a perfect logo, and instead just changed the text

3.     United Airways sent the logo to another firm who only changed the text and the blue to a lighter color
